Windy conditions at the 4th Annual Cedar Beach Open Water Meet - July 22

Peter Smit

The weather forecast from the previous days promised sunny weather and calm seas.  They were correct with the sunny weather, but wrong with the calm seas . . . .  20 MPH wind gusts from the north-east and 2+ feet waves crashing on the beach.  If the wind came from the south, the event would have been canceled as the swimmers would be pushed towards Connecticut during their swim. Of course later that mroning the Long Island Sound was calm, perfect for open water competition.

The connditions were also too difficult for the sharks and they stayed home.

The open water buoys could not be deployed as the wind would be moving them to NYC.

For safety reasons the 500 event for the younger swimmers was canceled. Still we had eight 10 & Unders compete.

Swimming to the east into the wind and current would only be possible for a few of  the strongest swimmers.

As we did not want to cancel the whole event we decided that everyone would swim a 600 meter race parallel to the beach from beyond the east end of the swimming area to the west end of the Cedar Beach swim area. No surprise, most swimmers were happy with this change.

Of the 53 TVSC entries 14 of the younger swimmers were not allowed to compete. The remaining 39 TVSC swimmers did some real heavy duty open water swimming and all made it. Great job!
