Cedar Beach - July 30, 2023 - The first Long Island heatwave of the summer broke yesterday evening. So, the running conditions this morning were perfect, but the swimming conditions were not for the 2023 Town of Brookhaven Lifeguard Run-Swim-Run.

Trevor Green was first finishing the swimming leg

A strong breeze caused waves to break on Cedar Beach. Non-competing lifeguard, who were helping to guide the swimmers on surfboards and kajaks had a hard time on the water.

Even for the beach lifeguards the swimming conditions in the Sound were tough, but for pool lifequards it was even much worse, especially for the ones who never swam in open water.

Due to the waves open water sighting was very difficult and several and several swimmers swam hundreds of yards extra looking for the course bouys.  Eventually everyone completed the swimming leg.

Six future lifeguard junior team swimmers showed up.  Vivienne and Benjamin Rochlin (9), Genevieve Rochlin (14), Izzy Gedeon (14), Luke Kimmy (10) and Nate Kimmy (4).

Due to the rough swimming conditions, we did not allow the 10 & Unders to participate

The town allowed Izzy and Nate to compete with the male lifeguards, and Genevieve with the female lifeguards.

Nate got lost in the water, but we are sure he did not swim all te way to Connecticut.
