Three Village Swim Club Coaching Staff

As our head coach, Barry Roffer is the heart and soul of our program and the driving influence of our success as a team.

A graduate of Lincoln High School and Bethany College, Barry has a Master of Educaton from Penn State. An accomplished athlete, he was New York State 100 Breastroke Champion in 1964 and 1965. He was named to the All Presidents Conference and was a seven time NAIA All-American. In 1997, he was honored by Bethany College by being named to its Athletic Hall of Fame.

Barry has been the head coach of TVSC for more than 30 years. During his tenure, he has coached Olympic Trial Qualifiers, Senior National medalist, National Junior Team athlete, Junior National Champion, Junior and Senior National Qualifiers, NY State HS Record holder, Top-16 Nationally Ranked swimmers over 50 times and 10 consecutive County Championship Teams.

Peter Smit
is in his 10th season coaching for TVSC. He joined TVSC in 1999 after coaching Spirit Swimming of Newtown, Pennsylvania, for five years. He brought a wealth of knowledge, experience that has greatly benefitted the TVSC community.

He was born and raised in the Netherlands and was a middle-distance freestyle swimmer and water polo player for his Dutch club team, while in HS and college.

After receiving his engineering degree in the summer of 1979, he came to the US for a job in Santa Clara, California. Before and after work he trained for one year with the well-known Santa Clara Swim Club, coached at that time by Mitch Ivy. One of his teammates was the 15 year old Pablo Morales, who later became the 100 fly Olympic Champion in Barcelona 1992.

Peter became a US Citizen in 1990. The Smit family moved from California to Newtown, PA, in 1991 and moved from Newtown to Mount Sinai in the summer of 1999. In between trying to stay in shape as a master swimmer in the morning and coaching the age group swimmers at night, Peter is a Sr Systems Engineer for Anorad in Shirley.

Novice and Senior Team Coach
Mary Fleckenstein
has been coaching for TVSC for almost 10 years. She grew up in Poughkeepsie, NY where she swam age group and competed on her high school
boys team (there was no girls team at that time). She attended Plattsburgh State, where
she swam for 2 years. Mary broke 7 school/pool records for Plattsburgh in her freshman
year. She began coaching in Salisbury, Maryland in 1987 and has been coaching ever since.
In addition to her duties at TVSC, she is the coach of the Stony Brook Seawolves Masters Swim Team and a teacher assistant at Port Jefferson Elementary School. She is also chair of the Metropolitan LSC Swimming Board. The Fleckenstein family resides in Port Jefferson.

Head Novice and Senior Team Coach
Paul Furbeck
has been coaching for TVSC for more than 10 years. Paul has coached numerous novice swimmers ranked in the Top 8 in Metropolitan Swimming, Metropolitan Champions, Metropolitan record holders, and swimmers who have gone on to become ranked Nationally. Although proud of these achievements, Paul takes pride in the accomplishments of each and every swimmer on the team by creating an environment in which every child can realize his or her full potential. Coach Paul has completed the coursework for the level III certification from the American Swim Coaches Association and has attended numerous coaching clinics across the country.

Coach Paul swam on TVSC for 8 years, and Ward Melville High School for 4 years, specializing in the distance freestyle and backstroke events. Paul swam for coach Roffer in his senior year, forming a lifetime friendship. Coach Paul is currently a Physical Therapist with an MS in Physical Therapy from Touro College, and an MBA in Business from Clarkson University.

Junior Team Coach
Katie Oldenborg
, is another TVSC Alumnus. Katie is thrilled to have returned to the Three Village Swim Club after coaching the East End Swim Club for three years.
She started swimming with TVSC at age 12 and finished her competitive swimming career at the University of Richmond, where she obtained a BS in Biology and an elementary education certification.
Katie recently completed her master's degree at Stony Brook. She is an elementary school teacher for Longwood School District.

Junior Team Coach and TVSC alumni
Ray Willie
Coach Ray started his swimming career at age 7 right here on Three Village Swim Club. He holds an undergraduate degree from University at Buffalo and a masters degree from Stony Brook University both in applied mathematics.
He is currently a High School math teacher at East Islip High School.

Coach Ray was a 14 time All American for the University at Buffalo. He was two time MVP for the University, Freshman of the Year in 1989 and Upper New York State Swimmer of the Year in 1989.
In 2004 he was honored by University at Buffalo by being named in the Athlete Hall of Fame.

He began his coaching career in 1992 as assistant coach for Canisius College Men’s and Women’s Division I swimming program.
His tenure has included Head Junior Coach Cheektowaga Stingrays, Head Junior Coach Three Village Swim Club, and Head Coach Hauppauge Swim Club.

Coach Ray has coached several Top 16, Zone, Sectional and National qualifiers. He has been published in splash magazine twice for drill techniques on both Breaststroke and competitive dives.
He has also worked closely with Coach Bud Termin of TeamTermin sports performance, on interval training using finis tempo trainers and its affect on age group swimming technique.
He is currently working with Olympic Swimmers and Swimchampions.com to help promote age group swimming throughout the country with their fitter and faster tour.

Junior Team Coach and TVSC alumni
Jeff Chu
Junior Team Coach and TVSC Alumnus Jeff Chu is in his 1st season coaching for TVSC (November 2009).
He was born in Irvine, California, raised on Long Island, and was a swimmer from age 4 through college.
He has a degree in Neuroscience and Public Health from Stony Brook University, where he was a Division I assistant coach.
He currently teaches at Stony Brook in the biology department.
Coach Jeff was a TVSC team record holder in the 200 yard butterfly.
He graduated from Ward Melville High school setting school records in the 100 yard butterfly and 2 relays.
In college he was a school and pool record holder, with an NCAA DIII B cut his freshman year and was a member of a relay with a US Senior National qualifying time.
He was a member of the America East Commisioners Honor Roll and the Dean's Advisory Committee for the School of Health Technology and Management.
He is currently the safety chair of the Metropolitan LSC Swimming.
